The painting is an example of the ease of strokes and the high skill of the colorist, marine painter Cornelius Wagner.

The fishing village of Polperro, in which the present work was created, is one of the most atmospheric places in Cornwall and pulled out tourists and even many artists.


CORNELIUS WAGNER (Dresden 1870 – 1956 Söcking near Starnberg) is a member of the Düsseldorf School. At the age of 15 years, Wagner came to the Düsseldorf Art Academy (studied up to 1895) as a pupil of Prof. Eugen Dücker.

He undertook long journeys to the West Indies (1897) and Argentina (1904). In 1906 he settled in Düsseldorf-Kaiserswerth and stayed there until 1955. Wagner was a friend of Wilhelm Degode und Max Clarenbach.
