The painting depicts a thatched cottage in Normandy, where the artist has been active since 1900. The backside location probably refers to Varengeville-sur-Mer near Dieppe, alternatively to Saint-Pierre-de-Varengeville near Rouen.
The special feature of this small-scale painting is the high luminosity of the color, which reflects the atmosphere of a bright bright summer day.
José ENGEL-GARRY (Joinville-Ie-Pont 1873 – presumably 1915)
He came from an artist family. His father Pierre-Émile Engel was a famous tenor, composer and professor of singing at the Paris Conservatory.
José Engel was a pupil of Roll when takin part at the exhibitions of the Société National des Beaux-Arts.
This was a great success, for as early as 1897 a first painting was acquired by the city of Paris, and the French state bought further works of art in the following years.
